“Experts Warn Against Non-Stick Cookware Use”

Date:

As Canadians prepare to cook Thanksgiving meals, culinary experts caution against the common use of non-stick cookware due to its drawbacks. Julia House, a former food blogger, highlights the limited lifespan of non-stick pans, emphasizing their delicate nature. Some non-stick cookware contains PFAS, known as forever chemicals for their non-degradable nature.

PFAS are present not only in cookware but also in various products like cosmetics and medical devices. Exposure to PFAS, as stated by Health Canada, can have adverse effects on multiple bodily systems. California is considering banning PFAS-containing products, including cookware, a move opposed by some celebrity chefs.

British Columbia is monitoring California’s actions to determine its approach to PFAS regulation. The province is exploring legislative, regulatory, and litigation tools to address PFAS contamination. House and culinary expert David Lang suggest alternatives to PFAS-laden cookware, such as French steel or carbon steel pans, emphasizing proper maintenance and cooking techniques.

Lang recommends carbon steel pans for their ease of maintenance and longevity. Proper care and drying can ensure the durability of metal pans, making them a cost-effective choice over multiple non-stick pans. Learning to use traditional pans effectively can provide a safer cooking experience as well as long-lasting benefits. Mastering proper cooking techniques is key to achieving non-stick results with alternative pans.
