“Scientist Discovers Spider Mimicking Lethal Fungus”

Date:

In a surprising encounter during a guided tour in August 2025, scientist Alexander Bentley discovered a live spider hidden beneath a mass covered in what appeared to be a lethal parasitic fungus. The herpetologist, known for leading Amazon rainforest tours in Ecuador, encountered a phenomenon reminiscent of the parasitic fungi depicted in the post-apocalyptic series “The Last of Us.”

The parasitic fungus, commonly referred to as “zombie fungus,” infects insects and arachnids, manipulating them to spread spores in a manner that resembles zombie-like behavior, as described by the National Library of Medicine. This particular spider exhibited two tubercle-like structures on its abdomen, typically a sign of successful cordyceps infection.

Initially mistaken for a cordyceps-infected spider that miraculously survived, further investigation revealed that it was an entirely new arachnid species mimicking fungus like cordyceps, possibly for hunting or defense purposes. The groundbreaking discovery was detailed in the publication Zootaxa, sparking both excitement and skepticism among scientists.

Upon observing signs of life in the spider, Bentley turned to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist for insights. Collaborating with colleague David Ricardo Díaz-Guevara, they confirmed the spider as a new species named Taczanowskia waska after meticulous morphological analyses.

Experts speculate that the spider’s fungus-like appearance may serve as an aggressive hunting tactic or a defensive mechanism against predators. While some believe it could be a camouflage strategy, others, like biologist Andrew Swafford, suggest the purpose of the spider’s unique features remains uncertain until further research is conducted.

This extraordinary finding, facilitated by platforms like iNaturalist, has captivated the scientific community, with mycologist Monika Fischer praising the impact of citizen science. Bentley hailed this discovery as unparalleled in his rainforest explorations, describing it as the most remarkable and rare encounter of his career.
