Toronto’s most recent cultural hub was officially launched in North York, eliciting joy and enthusiasm within the Iranian community residing in the city. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, along with Coun. Lily Cheng (Willowdale) and Member of Parliament for Willowdale Ali Ehsassi, joined Persian-Canadians at Centre Park to reveal the sign marking the establishment of Little Iran.
Expressing gratitude to the Iranian community for their unity and celebrations during the Thanksgiving weekend, Mayor Chow described the day as a historic moment. The event at Centre Park featured live music, dance performances, Persian cuisine and sweets, and art displays, with plans in motion to introduce a Persian garden in the park.
Afkham Mardukhi, president of the Intercultural Iranian Canadian Resource Centre, emphasized the significance of the recognition, stating, “We truly feel like we have two homes, another layer of belonging and acknowledgment by Canadians.” Maral Esmaeili, a volunteer with the Iranian Women’s Organization of Ontario, shared how Little Iran evokes a sense of belonging and familiarity, inviting people from all cultures to partake in the celebrations.
Attendee Mahsa Mortazavi, who attended the festivities at Centre Park, reflected on the growth and vitality of the Iranian community in Canada, underscoring their positive impact on society. Sam Fayaz, whose family has operated a Persian grocery store for over three decades, highlighted the community’s longstanding presence and the city’s official recognition of the area as Little Iran, a designation already embraced by Farsi speakers.
The establishment of Little Iran is seen as a bridge to foster closer community ties and enhance awareness of Persian culture among the broader population, aiming to enrich cultural diversity and understanding in Toronto.
