“Iconic ‘Eyeball Rocks’ to be Demolished for Highway Twinning”

Date:

The iconic “eyeball rocks” overlooking Nova Scotia’s Highway 103 are set to be removed to facilitate the highway’s twinning. Jason Smith, one of the original artists behind the eyes, expressed mixed feelings about their impending demolition. The artwork, created in October 2017 by Smith and his friend Neil along with their children, has become a cherished unofficial landmark.

Initially, the rocks were intended to feature emojis, but the plan changed to painting eyes after a highway supervisor interrupted their work. The painted boulders, which gained popularity among travelers, were later vandalized with graffiti, prompting Smith and Neil to transform them into the recognizable eyes.

Despite the rocks’ impending destruction, there has been a strong emotional response from the community, with some expressing sadness at losing the landmark while others remain hopeful for future artistic installations. The Department of Public Works confirmed that the rocks will be blasted later in the month as construction progresses on the highway twinning project.

Although Smith regrets the rocks’ fate, he acknowledges that their legacy will live on in memories and photographs. He and Neil have maintained the artwork over the years and are considering being present when the rocks are blasted. Smith emphasized that the intention behind the eyes was to bring joy to people, and he is grateful for the support and smiles it has brought to many.
