“U.S. Seizes Sanctioned Oil Tanker near Venezuela”

Date:

The United States announced the seizure of a sanctioned oil tanker near Venezuela, as stated by U.S. President Donald Trump. This action, involving the largest tanker ever seized, led to a surge in oil prices and heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas. Trump, who has been urging Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to resign, mentioned that further developments were underway without providing specifics, stating, “We keep it, I guess.”

This incident marks the first known seizure of an oil tanker since Trump authorized a significant military buildup in the region, amidst his repeated discussions of potential U.S. military involvement in Venezuela. The U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi disclosed on social media that the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, and the military collaborated on executing a seizure warrant for a crude oil tanker engaged in transporting sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran.

Venezuela’s government condemned the seizure, labeling it as a “blatant theft and act of international piracy.” The statement emphasized that the aggression against Venezuela was driven by the desire to exploit the country’s natural resources, particularly its oil reserves. The seized vessel, identified as the Skipper, had been sanctioned by the U.S. for its involvement in Iranian oil trading under the name Adisa.

Oil futures experienced an upturn post the news of the seizure, with global Brent crude futures rising by 0.4% and U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures gaining 0.4% as well. Maduro, amidst the reports of the tanker’s seizure, made no mention of the incident during a military battle commemoration march.

The U.S. military’s recent activities near Venezuela, including the seizure of the oil tanker and flight of fighter jets over the Gulf of Venezuela, have fueled tensions in the region. President Maduro accused the U.S. of aiming to control Venezuela’s vast oil reserves, while critics raised concerns over the legality and motives behind the U.S. actions. The seizure of the tanker has been viewed as a significant and provocative event with potential far-reaching international implications.
