“Taylor Swift Faces Trademark Lawsuit Over ‘Showgirl’ Album”

Date:

A legal claim alleges that Taylor Swift’s album “The Life of a Showgirl” has infringed on the branding of a real showgirl’s life. Maren Wade has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit in a federal court in California, stating that Swift’s album from 2025 shares a striking resemblance to the aesthetic of Wade’s own work titled “Confessions of a Showgirl.” Wade, known for her column in the Las Vegas Weekly called “Confessions of a Showgirl,” which she later turned into a live show on a national tour, claims that both works have similar structures, dominant phrases, and commercial impressions.

Described as a singer, songwriter, comedian, and writer, Maren Wade, under her legal name Maren Flagg, operates under the “Showgirl” brand, encompassing performances, writing, and digital media. Swift’s album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” her 12th studio album released in October 2025, achieved significant sales within its first week. The album cover features Swift in Las Vegas cabaret attire, immersed in water, showcasing her signature orange and mint green color scheme.

Following the lawsuit filing, Swift released a new video for the album track “Elizabeth Taylor,” featuring archival footage of the late Hollywood icon. The lawsuit claims that the album’s promotion and associated products have caused “textbook reverse confusion,” where a junior user’s extensive presence overshadows the senior user’s mark, leading consumers to believe the original is the imitation.

Notably, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office denied trademark registration for “Life of a Showgirl” due to potential confusion with existing trademarks. The lawsuit seeks an injunction to prevent Swift and her entities from using the “Life of a Showgirl” name and imagery, along with monetary compensation for damages related to the use of the brand. Swift’s representative declined to comment on the lawsuit, while Wade and her legal team assert that Swift’s team would have been aware of the existing trademark for “Confessions of a Showgirl.”
