“Venezuelan Opposition Leader Emerges in Oslo as Nobel Laureate”

Date:

Maria Corina Machado, a prominent figure in the Venezuelan opposition, made a public appearance in Oslo after almost a year of being out of the public eye following her escape from Venezuela. She emerged on a hotel balcony in Norway’s capital, where a crowd of emotional supporters gathered to cheer for her as the new Nobel laureate. Machado’s appearance came shortly after her daughter accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf. The event marked a significant moment as Machado had led a peaceful challenge against the authoritarian government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Dressed casually in jeans and a puffer jacket, Machado spent time outside the hotel greeting supporters and family members amid chants of “President! President!” The crowd outside the hotel enthusiastically sang the Venezuelan national anthem, emphasizing their support for Machado’s efforts.

Following her public appearance, Machado expressed her desire for her supporters to return to Venezuela. This sentiment was echoed by global demonstrations in various cities celebrating her Nobel Peace Prize win before the official award ceremony took place.

Machado had been in hiding for nearly a year since a brief detention in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, after participating in a protest. She was expected to attend the Oslo award ceremony but could not make it on time, as revealed in an audio recording published on the Nobel website. Her daughter accepted the prestigious prize on her behalf, affirming Machado’s unwavering commitment to a free Venezuela.

The Norwegian Prime Minister welcomed Machado upon her arrival and expressed support for a democratic Venezuela. Flight data indicated that Machado flew to Oslo from Bangor, Maine, showcasing the lengths she went to attend the ceremony despite extreme risks.

Machado’s win was a recognition of her efforts towards a democratic transition in Venezuela. The lead-up to the presidential election in 2024 was marred by repression and human rights violations, drawing international concern. Machado, since being announced as the Nobel laureate, has highlighted the plight of human rights activists, opposition figures, and journalists facing persecution in Venezuela.

Machado acknowledged the impact of U.S. actions against the Maduro regime, emphasizing the need for international attention and pressure to address the situation in Venezuela. Despite speculation, she clarified that she was not engaged in discussions with the Trump administration regarding regime change in Venezuela.

In her public appearance and interactions with the media, Machado conveyed a strong message of resilience and hope for a free Venezuela, underscoring the ongoing struggle for democracy in her homeland.
