Fired University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore faced charges after allegedly breaking into the apartment of a woman with whom he had an affair. The incident occurred following the woman’s report to the school about their relationship, resulting in Moore losing his job. He was charged with home invasion and stalking.
During a court hearing where Moore participated via video from jail, prosecutors unveiled details of the events leading to Moore’s sudden dismissal from the football program. According to Kati Rezmierski, Washtenaw County first assistant prosecutor, Moore and the woman had been involved in a long-standing affair that ended when she reported the relationship to the university.
After the woman ceased communication with Moore, he resorted to repeatedly calling and texting her. Subsequently, the woman cooperated with an investigation by the University of Michigan, leading to Moore’s termination from his coaching position due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
Following his job loss, Moore allegedly forced his way into the woman’s apartment, brandishing kitchen knives and scissors while threatening self-harm. He reportedly told the woman, “I’m going to kill myself. I’m going to make you watch. My blood is on your hands. You’ve ruined my life.”
Moore, who has a wife and three children, was released on a $25,000 bond after a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf. He was ordered to have no contact with the woman, wear a GPS tracking device, stay in Michigan, and refrain from alcohol. A court hearing was scheduled for January 22.
Having signed a lucrative five-year contract last year, Moore will not receive a buyout as he was fired for cause. He took over as head coach after the departure of Jim Harbaugh to lead the Los Angeles Chargers. The team’s offensive coordinator, Moore, led the Wolverines in their latest games, including an upcoming match against Texas in the Citrus Bowl. Interim coach Biff Poggi will oversee the team as Michigan searches for a permanent replacement.
