“Newfoundland and Labrador Election Underway”

Date:

Polling stations have commenced operations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador for the ongoing provincial election. The polls opened at 8 a.m. NT and 7:30 a.m. in most of Labrador, spanning 40 districts.

Jeanette Miranda, a voter in St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, expressed her satisfaction with the quick and easy voting process. She highlighted her focus on supporting female candidates to increase female representation in the House of Assembly, emphasizing the effectiveness of women in leadership roles.

Elizabeth Oliver and Noel Roy emphasized the importance of voting for candidates they trust, with Roy stressing the significance of having a reliable Member of the House of Assembly. Various party leaders, including Liberal Leader John Hogan and PC Leader Tony Wakeham, were among the early voters in the election.

Hogan, casting his vote in St. John’s, expressed confidence in his party’s candidates, emphasizing the blend of experience and new perspectives within their roster. He criticized the Conservative election platform while promoting the comprehensive and forward-thinking approach of the Liberal plan.

In Kippens, PC Leader Tony Wakeham, accompanied by his political staff, marked the second anniversary of his leadership selection by voting. Wakeham exuded confidence in his party’s campaign, anticipating positive outcomes and potential seat changes in favor of the Progressive Conservatives.

NDP Leader Jim Dinn cast his vote privately in St. John’s, underscoring the culmination of a significant year for elections in Newfoundland and Labrador. The province has witnessed a federal election in April, municipal elections last month, and now the provincial election.

The Liberal Party, led by John Hogan, aims to secure its fourth consecutive term in government, focusing on initiatives like the Quebec memorandum of understanding to boost the province’s economy. The Progressive Conservatives, under Tony Wakeham, pledge to address issues stemming from what they perceive as a decade of Liberal governance, with emphasis on healthcare and public safety improvements. The NDP, led by Jim Dinn, proposes cost-saving measures and investments in public services and affordable housing.

The provincial election represents the final scheduled election in Newfoundland and Labrador for the year 2025. Voting hours extend from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. NT, or 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. AT in most of Labrador. CBC Newfoundland and Labrador will provide comprehensive coverage of the election results later today.
