Date:

The Canadian Premier League final, held in a snowy blizzard and highlighted by a spectacular bicycle kick, has garnered more than one billion views, as per a league representative. The game between Atlético Ottawa and Calgary, which ended in a 2-1 victory for the home team, gained widespread attention on social media, particularly due to David Rodriguez’s remarkable equalizing goal.

Laura Armstrong, the league’s communications director, revealed that videos of the final match reached 786 million viewers within the initial 48 hours and have now surpassed one billion views worldwide, with coverage spanning 174 countries. She described this event as a rare and exceptional occurrence for the CPL, which typically doesn’t attract the same level of global interest as Major League Soccer in North America.

Armstrong expressed excitement about the international outreach the league has received following the game, stating, “We’ve had numerous inquiries from around the globe seeking more information about our league, which is fantastic.” She confidently asserted that in terms of viewership and engagement, this match stands out as the most watched game in CPL history.

During the intense snowfall at Ottawa’s TD Place stadium, Rodriguez executed a stunning overhead bicycle kick that struck the underside of the crossbar and crossed the goal line, earning the nickname “icicle kick” online. Armstrong referred to the goal as “extraordinary” and emphasized the memorable nature of the night.

Rodriguez clinched his second goal in extra time, securing a dramatic victory for Atlético. The presence of Canada men’s head coach Jesse Marsch at the game underscored the widespread interest generated by the CPL final, with Marsch receiving numerous messages from Europe regarding the event.

While some questioned the decision to proceed with the match under blizzard conditions, Armstrong clarified that the league had contingency measures in place. An orange game ball was utilized, and additional corner flags were installed along the sidelines to enhance visibility.

Throughout the evening, the match was intermittently paused to allow snow removal crews to clear crucial areas of the field, including the goalmouths. Armstrong emphasized the league’s commitment to balancing the integrity of the competition with the safety and satisfaction of all involved, given the significance of the final as a one-time opportunity.

Overall, the CPL final’s remarkable success in terms of viewership and impact has solidified its status as a significant moment in Canadian sports history.
