Ireland ousts Canada in thrilling U-17 World Cup shootout

Date:

Canada was eliminated from the FIFA U-17 World Cup after a tough loss to Ireland in a lengthy 10-round penalty shootout during the round-of-32 match on Friday. The decisive moment came when Irish goalkeeper Alex Noonan made a crucial one-handed save, denying Canadian defender Elijah Roche to secure a 9-8 victory in the shootout. Prior to that, Canada had equalized late in the game to force the penalties.

The shootout saw both teams trading goals, with Canadian goalkeeper Jonathan Ransom making a critical save to keep Canada’s hopes alive. However, it was Noonan’s heroics that ultimately sealed the win for Ireland. Notable scorers for Canada in the shootout included Marius Aiyenero, Sergei Kozlovskiy, Van Parker, and others, while Ireland’s successful penalty takers included Michael Noonan, Finn Sherlock, and Jaden Umeh, among others.

Despite the heartbreaking defeat, Canada’s performance in the tournament marked a significant improvement from past years. Having previously struggled with a winless record of 0-20-4 in eight previous appearances, the team showed great progress this time around. Ireland, on the other hand, advanced to the round of 16 where they will face Switzerland, a team that won the tournament in 2009 in their only other appearance.

In the game, Canada managed to level the score in the 85th minute thanks to a brilliant strike by Kozlovskiy. The 17-year-old defender, who made his tournament debut as a late substitute, showcased his talent with a well-placed shot from outside the penalty area. Despite their efforts, Canada fell short in the penalty shootout, ending their World Cup journey.

The match had its share of drama, including a late penalty appeal for Ireland that was waved off after a VAR review. Canada put up a strong fight throughout the game, outshooting Ireland in the first half and displaying resilience even after falling behind.

The tournament, being held at the Aspire Zone complex, has seen thrilling matches and surprising results. With the final scheduled for November 27 at Khalifa International Stadium, the competition continues to captivate fans with its exciting matchups and talented young players.
