Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed on Monday that Mark Wiseman, a prominent business executive, will take on the role of Canada’s ambassador to the United States. Wiseman’s appointment, although well-versed in cross-border matters, has raised controversy due to his previous statements regarding Quebec.
Wiseman, a close ally of the prime minister and a seasoned executive in major Canadian pension funds, will assume his new position on February 15, 2026. His arrival in Washington comes at a crucial juncture, with strained relations between Canada and the U.S. following President Donald Trump’s trade disputes, creating a need for resolution in the upcoming year.
“Mark Wiseman’s wealth of experience, network, and unwavering dedication come at a pivotal moment of reshaping our ties with the United States. As a key member of our negotiation team, he will advance the interests of Canadian workers, businesses, and institutions while fostering mutual opportunities,” Carney stated.
Wiseman’s primary responsibility will involve leading discussions on the review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), set to commence in January. His focus will include seeking solutions to alleviate the burdensome tariffs imposed by Trump on crucial Canadian industries such as steel, aluminum, automobiles, and timber.
In preparation for the CUSMA talks, Trump’s trade representative, Jamieson Greer, has outlined specific demands for Canada to meet for a successful extension of the agreement. These include modifications to supply management practices, laws safeguarding Canadian culture, and the removal of provincial restrictions on U.S. liquor brands.
Despite concerns surrounding Wiseman’s past remarks on supply management, particularly in Quebec, his expertise and rapport with Carney are viewed as strengths. Ontario’s representative to the U.S., David Paterson, emphasized Wiseman’s financial acumen and diverse sector experience, essential for navigating the intensifying CUSMA renewal discussions.
While Quebec has expressed reservations about Wiseman’s appointment, citing his stance on supply management, Carney has reassured that the protection of supply management remains a priority for his government. Wiseman’s role as ambassador will primarily focus on advancing CUSMA negotiations with the unpredictable Trump administration.
In anticipation of challenging negotiations with the U.S., Wiseman’s proficiency in finance and deal-making, as noted by former Alberta premier Jason Kenney, positions him as a suitable candidate to safeguard Canadian interests.
