The mastermind behind the award-winning animated movie “KPop Demon Hunters” has been honored with the key to Toronto, her hometown. Maggie Kang, the Korean-Canadian filmmaker, was presented with the key by Mayor Olivia Chow during a panel discussion at Departure Festival celebrating the film’s success.
Mayor Chow commended Kang’s achievements and highlighted how her journey would serve as an inspiration for future generations. Kang, without speaking, graciously accepted the key and later posed for photographs alongside Mayor Chow and Cindy Gouveia, the president of her alma mater, Sheridan College.
Following its debut, “KPop Demon Hunters” has emerged as the most-watched film in Netflix history, boasting a groundbreaking soundtrack and a confirmed sequel in the works. During the panel, Kang, the writer and co-director, hinted at the upcoming project, expressing her commitment to maintaining the same level of dedication and creating a movie that resonates with her vision.
In recognition of her contributions, Kang is set to receive the cultural innovator award at the Departure Honours gala later the same day.
