Periodically, the main cathedral in the ancient southern Italian city becomes crowded as people eagerly await the liquefaction of the dried blood of San Gennaro, the city’s revered patron saint. This phenomenon is viewed as a symbol of safeguarding a city marked by historical challenges like invasions, plagues, and earthquakes.
In the overlooked neighborhood of Rione Sanità in Naples, a different kind of miracle linked to San Gennaro has been quietly evolving. Here, cultural heritage has transformed into local employment opportunities, skills development, and an increased influx of tourists. At the entrance of the Catacombs of San Gennaro, Antonio Aveta, 22, and Giada Colasurdo, 20, were engrossed in reading about the saint’s history, preparing to lead visitors through the underground network of ancient burial chambers.
The revitalization of the catacombs was spearheaded by La Paranza, a social cooperative established in 2006 by parish priest Antonio Alfredo. Initially focused on the catacombs, the cooperative has expanded to include educational programs and locally operated cooperative ventures.
Aveta, a product of La Paranza’s after-school initiatives, now finds himself guiding tours through the catacombs, a role he never imagined he would undertake. Colasurdo, who comes from the affluent Capodimonte neighborhood overlooking Sanità, has discovered a newfound appreciation for her community through her work as a guide.
The bridge constructed in 1810 that divides the two neighborhoods symbolizes the socio-economic disparity present in the area. However, initiatives like La Paranza’s activities at the Catacombs of San Gennaro and the Locanda del Monacone restaurant are contributing to the neighborhood’s rejuvenation, providing training and employment opportunities to local youth.
While Naples is experiencing a surge in tourism, concerns about overtourism and its impact on the local community are mounting.
