Prince Andrew to Renounce Duke of York Title

Date:

Prince Andrew announced on Friday that he will relinquish his title of Duke of York amid ongoing criticism surrounding his conduct and associations with the late American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In a statement, Andrew expressed that the persistent accusations against him were diverting attention from the responsibilities of his elder brother King Charles and the broader activities of the British Royal Family. He reaffirmed his commitment to prioritize his obligations to his family and country, reiterating his withdrawal from public life five years ago.

With the King’s approval, Andrew has decided to take a further step by renouncing the use of his titles and honors. Despite vehemently refuting the allegations leveled against him, he believed this course of action was necessary. The decision to surrender his titles was made after consultations with senior members of the royal family, and the King reportedly welcomed the outcome. As the son of the late Queen Elizabeth, Andrew retains his status as a prince and remains eighth in line to the throne.

The move to relinquish his titles comes amidst a long-standing scandal involving Andrew. In 2022, he settled a lawsuit filed by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexually assaulting her when she was a minor. Andrew has consistently denied her claims, which have garnered renewed attention with the upcoming release of her memoir. In her book, Giuffre alleged that Andrew, feeling entitled, believed he had the right to engage in sexual relations with her.

Royal biographer Robert Hardman highlighted the ongoing scrutiny faced by Andrew, indicating that both the palace and the prince agreed on the necessity for further distancing. Andrew’s aim is to demonstrate proactivity and restore some dignity amid the ongoing controversy. Despite previously relinquishing his title of “His Royal Highness,” Andrew will maintain residence at Royal Lodge within the Windsor Castle estate but will no longer participate in the annual royal Christmas gatherings at Sandringham estate.

While Andrew’s daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, remain unaffected by his decision, his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also no longer be referred to as the Duchess of York. The Royal Family has experienced a reduction in active members in recent years, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle having previously stepped back from official duties. Historian Anthony Seldon noted the significance of Andrew’s title relinquishment, emphasizing that it marks a rare occurrence, with the last senior royal being stripped of a dukedom over a century ago.
