A fresh search operation for the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 plane has been initiated, more than a decade after it disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The Boeing 777 vanished on March 8, 2014, while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 249 passengers on board, predominantly Chinese nationals along with individuals from Malaysia, Canada, France, and other countries.
Despite extensive efforts, little information has been uncovered about the aircraft’s disappearance. Analysis of satellite data suggests that the plane likely went down in the southern Indian Ocean, with only a few small fragments found on the east African coast and Indian Ocean islands. Previous large-scale searches yielded no significant discoveries, leaving the fate of the plane and its passengers shrouded in uncertainty.
The recent resumption of search operations has sparked renewed optimism that the enduring mystery surrounding the flight may finally be resolved. The search is being conducted under a “no find, no fee” agreement between the Malaysian government and the Texas-based marine robotics firm Ocean Infinity. The company stands to earn $70 million if substantial wreckage is located.
Ocean Infinity, which had previously engaged in an unsuccessful search in 2018, has upgraded its technology for the current mission. The search area in the southern Indian Ocean spans 15,000 square kilometers, with the company focusing its efforts on the most promising locations based on expert analysis.
The latest deep-sea search, set to commence intermittently, is scheduled for a 55-day duration starting this week. Utilizing autonomous underwater vehicles, Ocean Infinity aims to map the seabed up to depths of 6,000 meters in its pursuit to locate the missing aircraft.
Following its last known communication shortly after takeoff, the aircraft deviated from its flight path and subsequently disappeared from radar. Previous search endeavors, including a multinational effort in the southern Indian Ocean, failed to yield conclusive results despite substantial resources being allocated.
An investigative report from 2018 indicated possible deliberate manipulation of the aircraft’s controls, though the responsible party remains unidentified. The report also highlighted procedural errors within air traffic control centers, emphasizing the need for improved protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Plausible explanations for the disappearance range from hijacking to mechanical failures, with numerous theories circulating in the absence of definitive evidence. The absence of distress signals, ransom demands, adverse weather conditions, or technical malfunctions has only deepened the enigma surrounding the ill-fated flight.
