Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Qatar has pledged significant strategic investments in Canada’s major infrastructure projects. This funding is expected to expedite project completion, boost the energy sector, and generate employment opportunities for Canadians. Carney made these remarks at a press conference held in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
Describing this as a new era in the relationship between the two nations, Carney highlighted plans to enhance cultural ties between Canada and Qatar. This includes expanding direct flight routes to promote tourism and business activities, fostering mutual understanding, trust, and collaboration.
Following prolonged negotiations, Canada aims to finalize the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Qatar by summer. Additionally, Canada will deploy a defense attaché to Doha to strengthen defense partnerships with Qatar.
Earlier, Carney was warmly welcomed at a ceremony and held discussions with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Carney extended an invitation for the Emir to visit Canada later this year, emphasizing the importance of bilateral relations between the two countries.
The purpose of Carney’s visit is to enhance trade and cooperation in various sectors including artificial intelligence, infrastructure, energy, and defense with Qatar. This visit follows meetings in Beijing, where Canadian officials engaged with key political and business figures to strengthen trade ties with China and diversify Canada’s economic partnerships beyond traditional allies like the United States.
Carney’s overseas trip will conclude with his participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
