“Nova Scotian Folk Art Soars: Everett Lewis Painting Fetches $18K”

Date:

A recent auction saw a painting of two black cats by Everett Lewis, a Nova Scotian artist, fetch around $18,000. While he is more notorious than famous, with a history of imitating his wife Maud Lewis’s style, Everett’s original works have gained recognition and value. At a Saint John auction, one of his pieces, expected to sell for $4,500, was sold for $18,400, reflecting the increasing interest in Nova Scotian folk art.

The CEO of Miller & Miller, Ethan Miller, noted the charm and heartfelt nature of Everett Lewis’s paintings, attributing their appeal to collectors. Similarly, a painting by Joe Norris, a former fisherman turned artist from Nova Scotia, exceeded expectations by selling for $23,600 at auction. The surge in value for Nova Scotia folk art is linked to a pivotal moment in 2022 when a Maud Lewis painting sold for $350,000, sparking wider interest in the genre.

Sarah Jones, co-owner of Jones Auction House in Saint John, highlighted the stability of art as an investment amidst financial fluctuations. She also mentioned the ripple effect of artists like Maud Lewis, leading to the discovery and appreciation of other Atlantic Canadian talents. The recent auction not only saw Everett Lewis’s painting sell well but also featured artworks by artists from New Brunswick and Newfoundland exceeding their estimated values.

The growing recognition of artists like Everett Lewis, Joe Norris, and others in Atlantic Canada indicates a shift towards appreciating diverse talents in the region. This trend reflects a broader appreciation for folk art, with buyers recognizing the authenticity and emotional depth in these unique creations.
