Intensified scrutiny is now directed at the safety protocols of a Swiss bar that tragically caught fire during a New Year’s Eve celebration, resulting in the loss of at least 40 lives. Prosecutors have indicated that the fire likely originated when sparkling candles were brought too close to the ceiling.
Witnesses observed bar staff carrying fountain candles on champagne bottles at the Le Constellation establishment, raising concerns about the foam material used for soundproofing the basement ceiling where partygoers were dancing. Valais Chief Prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud stated that preliminary evidence points to the fire being sparked by the proximity of the candles to the ceiling, leading to a rapid and widespread blaze.
Authorities are now investigating the bar’s recent renovations, fire suppression systems, escape routes, and the occupancy level during the incident to determine potential criminal liability. Despite prompt police response, the severity of the fire’s impact has made the identification of victims a challenging process. So far, only one victim, teenage golfer Emanuele Galeppini from Italy, has been identified.
Local residents described the bar as popular among young people, with reports indicating that many of the deceased were youths. The tragic incident has prompted discussions about bar safety in Valais and across Switzerland, with officials emphasizing the need for stringent safety measures moving forward.
Jacques Moretti, one of the bar’s owners, mentioned that the establishment had undergone regular inspections, emphasizing compliance with regulations. Stéphane Ganzer, Valais’ security head, highlighted the ongoing investigation into the bar’s safety checks and maintenance records, noting that the town had not raised any concerns prior to the incident.
Residents have been mourning the victims of the fire, leaving tributes and flowers near the bar site. One resident shared her close call, revealing that she narrowly avoided being at the bar with friends when the fire broke out, expressing shock and concern for her missing co-workers who were inside during the tragic event.
