“Canadian Swimmer Penny Oleksiak Suspended 2 Years”

Date:

Swimmer Penny Oleksiak, recognized as Canada’s most successful female Olympian, has agreed to a two-year suspension from competitions following three instances of whereabouts non-compliance. The period of her ineligibility will last until July 14, 2027, with the ban being applied retroactively from July 15 of this year.

The Aquatics Integrity Unit disclosed that the 25-year-old athlete from Toronto will face disqualification of any competitive outcomes starting from June 16 onwards. This includes the loss of medals, points, and prizes.

Athlete whereabouts play a crucial role in the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) drug testing program. Athletes are required to provide a daily 60-minute availability window, 90 days in advance, for potential testing, irrespective of their location globally. World Aquatics states that if an athlete submits whereabouts information that is “late, inaccurate, or incomplete, resulting in their unavailability for testing,” they may receive a Filing Failure penalty.

In response to the whereabouts issue, Oleksiak withdrew from the world aquatics championships in July, emphasizing that the matter does not involve any banned substances. She asserted her commitment to being a clean athlete and refrained from further commenting on the issue at that time.

A combination of three filing failures or missed tests within a 12-month span can lead to a two-year ban. Suzanne Paulins, the CEO of Swimming Canada, emphasized the organization’s dedication to upholding all anti-doping regulations outlined by the Canadian Anti-Doping Program, World Aquatics, and WADA. While accepting Oleksiak’s explanation of inadvertent errors and no use of banned substances, Paulins highlighted the importance of anti-doping rules in ensuring a fair competition environment for all athletes.

Acknowledging Oleksiak’s achievements, including seven Olympic medals and nine world championship medals, Paulins expressed the hope of seeing her return to the pool post her suspension.
