“U Sports CEO Disappointed as McGill University Cuts 25 Teams”

Date:

U Sports CEO Pierre Arsenault expressed disappointment over McGill University’s recent announcement to discontinue 25 sports teams after the 2025-26 season. McGill conducted an extensive review involving consultations with various stakeholders before finalizing the decision last Thursday. Arsenault acknowledged the challenges faced by student-athletes in balancing academics and sports, emphasizing the significance of their achievements.

The university cited the results of an audit in 2024 and an external review in 2025, which indicated that the current sports structure was no longer sustainable. McGill evaluated all clubs and teams over several months based on criteria such as the RSEQ sport model, competitive viability, recruitment, and resource needs. Among the teams facing cuts for the 2026-27 season are track and field, women’s rugby, and men’s volleyball, along with several others.

Furthermore, McGill mentioned that the reinstatement of its cheerleading and women’s flag football teams is contingent on receiving an exemption from the RSEQ for the upcoming season. Athletics Canada and Athletisme Quebec expressed disappointment with McGill, particularly regarding the impact on Canadian track and field development and access to top-level competition. They urged the university to reconsider the decision and offered assistance in finding solutions to restore the affected programs.

Arsenault stated that U Sports was notified of the decision shortly before the public announcement but lacked detailed information. He emphasized the need to raise awareness about the value of university sports and their broader impact on youth development. Emphasizing the importance of showcasing opportunities at the university level to inspire younger generations, Arsenault highlighted the significance of supporting student-athletes and fostering their growth.
