“Global Leaders Meet in Paris to Secure Ukraine’s Peace”

Date:

The coalition of nations backing Ukraine, which includes Canada, is at a critical juncture as they assemble in Paris this week to chart a viable path towards a potential ceasefire and reconstruction plans. Prime Minister Mark Carney will be present at the meeting of over 30 leaders, with a primary focus on discussing postwar security guarantees to dissuade Russia from pausing briefly and then resuming its aggressive expansion into Eastern Europe.

French President Emmanuel Macron has extended the invitation for the leaders to gather on Tuesday, with a preliminary session of defense chiefs from coalition nations scheduled for Monday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently engaged with 18 national security and defense advisors from coalition countries in Kyiv.

Discussions, including Canada’s former NATO ambassador and current defense policy advisor to the prime minister, David Angell, emphasized collective security guarantees and their role in the broader peace initiative led by the U.S. and President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy expressed optimism that security assurances would be finalized during the Paris meeting, which will also involve discussions with President Trump’s team.

Zelenskyy reiterated the necessity of robust and credible security guarantees in light of Russia’s ongoing aggression, denouncing Russia’s lack of genuine commitment to peace efforts. Matthew Schmidt, a national security expert at the University of New Haven, highlighted Ukraine’s success in mobilizing European support amid Russian threats, noting the significance of the coalition of supportive countries, including Canada.

Efforts are underway to bolster Ukraine’s position in potential peace negotiations, although the extent of Russia’s willingness to compromise remains uncertain. While the Kremlin has indicated a willingness to consider a U.S.-led peace framework for future talks, Russia’s demands, such as Ukrainian territorial concessions and military downsizing, pose significant challenges to reaching a resolution.
