Serena Williams Shuts Down Comeback Speculation

Date:

Serena Williams dispelled speculation about a potential return to tennis, affirming on social media that she has no plans to come back after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) spokesman revealed her registration with the sport’s drug-testing body, a preliminary step for a player considering a comeback.

The 44-year-old tennis icon, who last competed at the 2022 U.S. Open, refrained from using the term “retirement” at that time, opting to describe her departure as an “evolution” away from the sport. Amid uncertainties about her future in the game, Williams emphasized in a post, “Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.”

While her agent remained silent on the matter, U.S. Tennis Association spokesperson Brendan McIntyre acknowledged Serena’s paperwork filing with the ITIA to rejoin the International Registered Testing Pool. Should Williams decide to make a professional return, the tennis community awaits her comeback eagerly, praising her as one of the greatest champions in the sport’s history.

Renowned for her extraordinary talent both on and off the court, Serena’s potential return to the tour would undoubtedly captivate audiences. Her decision to re-enter the testing pool overseen by the ITIA, responsible for anti-doping and anti-corruption efforts, was initially disclosed by Bounces.

Confirming her inclusion in the testing pool, ITIA spokesperson Adrian Bassett informed the AP, “She is on the list and back in the testing pool,” underscoring the regulatory requirements for athletes seeking a comeback.

In a similar scenario, Williams’ older sister, Venus, reengaged in competition this July at 45 years old following a hiatus of nearly 1 1/2 years. Venus, a seven-time major singles champion, expressed her desire for Serena to rejoin her on the tour, reminiscing about their successful partnership that led to 14 Grand Slam doubles titles.

Reflecting on Serena’s potential return, Venus remarked, “I keep saying to my team: The only thing that would make this better is if she was here. Like, we always did everything together, so of course I miss her. But if she comes back, I’m sure she’ll let y’all know.”
