Mike Miller, a seasoned coach with almost three decades of experience, has traveled a diverse path in his career, transitioning from a small-town setting in Pennsylvania to Berlin. Throughout his journey, he has worked with NCAA Division II schools and NFL teams, although he had not previously held a head coaching position. That changed on Tuesday as he was appointed as the 46th head coach of the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL.
Miller’s promotion to head coach comes after his tenure as the Argonauts’ quarterbacks coach starting in 2022. Despite his new role, Miller expressed his commitment to maintaining his authentic approach to coaching during a press conference at BMO Field. Emphasizing honesty and open communication with players, he highlighted the importance of teamwork and collaboration.
In addition to his head coaching responsibilities, Miller will also serve as the team’s offensive coordinator and play-caller for the upcoming 2026 season. He steps into this role following the departure of his former boss, Ryan Dinwiddie, who recently made a surprising move to Ottawa to assume the position of head coach and general manager for the Redblacks.
Prior to joining the Toronto Argonauts, Miller held key coaching positions with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes. His success in developing quarterbacks was a significant factor in his appointment as head coach, as highlighted by Argonauts GM Michael (Pinball) Clemons. Under Miller’s guidance, quarterbacks such as Chad Kelly and Nick Arbuckle achieved notable successes and accolades, including being named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player and Grey Cup MOP.
The appointment of Miller as head coach marks a significant transition for the Argonauts, who are looking to regroup following a challenging 2025 season that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time in several years. Both Miller and Clemons expressed gratitude for the contributions of Ryan Dinwiddie and reflected on their collaborative efforts.
Acknowledging his journey from a running backs coach at Robert Morris University to his current position as head coach of the Toronto Argonauts, Miller expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has been afforded. He also extended thanks to key individuals who have supported him along the way, including health care workers and Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher, who played a pivotal role in his career development.
With a diverse coaching background that includes experience as a receivers coach and stints in NFL Europe, Miller brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role. His previous accomplishments, such as reaching the Super Bowl with the Arizona Cardinals, underscore his capabilities and readiness to lead the Toronto Argonauts into the upcoming CFL season.
