“Conservative MPs Question Support for Poilievre”

Date:

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s recent criticism of RCMP leadership on a podcast has sparked uncertainty among some party members about their continued support for him. According to five Conservative caucus members who spoke anonymously to Radio-Canada, Poilievre’s messaging has not evolved significantly since the last election, raising concerns about his suitability as a potential prime minister.

Radio-Canada interviewed a total of 10 Conservative insiders from across the country, including seven caucus members. Among them, four sources expressed hesitance about backing Poilievre in an upcoming confidence vote scheduled for January. One source criticized Poilievre’s call for a former prime minister to be jailed, deeming it irresponsible.

During a recent appearance on the YouTube channel Northern Perspective, Poilievre accused former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of breaking the law in relation to the Aga Khan scandal and the SNC-Lavalin affair. He alleged that the RCMP had concealed these violations and condemned their leadership as “despicable” for not holding the Liberal government accountable.

Critics within the Conservative party view Poilievre’s remarks as detrimental to his prime ministerial aspirations, with one member suggesting that his fixation on Trudeau and struggles to move past electoral defeat undermine his credibility. Sources plan to seek clarification from Poilievre regarding his comments at an upcoming caucus meeting.

Despite the backlash, supporters highlight Poilievre’s enduring popularity within the party. Quebec lieutenant Pierre Paul-Hus affirmed his confidence in Poilievre, characterizing the attacks on the RCMP as targeting former commissioner Brenda Lucki for alleged mistakes and political influence. In a statement, Poilievre defended his comments, attributing them to Lucki’s controversial track record.

While some acknowledge that Poilievre’s podcast remarks were a misstep, they urge giving him a second chance, citing his distinct political approach and authentic leadership style. A source close to Poilievre credits his authenticity for the party’s recent electoral success, noting the highest popular vote outcome since 1988.
