“Toronto Romance Writer Revolutionizes Editing with Immersive Audio”

Date:

Toronto romance writer Lily Chu uses a unique approach to editing her books by having her computer read them aloud while she goes about her daily activities to ensure an immersive experience for her audience. Chu, known for releasing her novels as audiobooks before print, targets multi-tasking listeners, a growing group according to a recent study by BookNet Canada.

During the pandemic in 2020, Chu penned her debut novel, “The Stand-In,” a romantic comedy featuring a biracial Canadian woman mistaken for a famous Chinese actress. The success of this book led to a deal with Audible, a popular online audiobook service, resulting in the “audio-first” release of her subsequent works, including her latest novel, “Just Kiss Already.”

The romance genre is experiencing a surge in popularity, particularly in audiobook form, driven by factors such as pandemic-induced isolation and the desire of readers, especially women, to enjoy guilt-free escapism while engaging in other activities. Audible reports that romance is among the fastest-growing genres on their platform in Canada, with a significant portion of listeners favoring it.

Audiobooks have seen a spike in preference among readers, as highlighted in a report by BookNet Canada, with the percentage of audiobook enthusiasts doubling from eight percent in 2020 to 16 percent in 2025. Romance ranks as the fourth most popular audiobook genre, following mysteries, thrillers, and science fiction.

Angelina Rocca, a Canadian romance audiobook narrator, emphasizes the importance of skilled narrators in delivering an immersive experience akin to “cinema in your ears.” By incorporating sound effects and vocal nuances that amplify women’s pleasure and perspectives, narrators enhance the emotional depth of the storytelling, resonating with listeners on a deeper level.

Despite lingering stigma around romance novels, the genre’s current surge in popularity and the rise of immersive audio experiences are helping to reduce misconceptions. Sarah Wendell, co-founder of the online romance community Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, notes that immersive audio provides a private space for individuals to explore sensuality and pleasure without judgment or interference.

In conclusion, the increasing demand for romance audiobooks reflects a broader trend in the publishing industry, with audiences seeking engaging and intimate storytelling experiences that cater to diverse preferences and lifestyles.
