Christine Sinclair, a prominent figure in Canadian and B.C. soccer, expressed her excitement about the FIFA 2026 Men’s World Cup following the completion of the draw.
The Canadian men’s team, ranked 27th, is set to play against Qatar and Switzerland at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver on June 18 and June 24, respectively, after being grouped with these two teams on Friday.
Their first match on June 12 in Toronto will be against a European opponent yet to be determined, with potential candidates being Italy, Northern Ireland, Wales, or Bosnia.
Switzerland holds the 17th spot in the global rankings, while Qatar is placed 51st.
Sinclair, who has participated in six World Cups for Canada, emphasized that the draw marks a crucial moment for athletes as they can now visualize the upcoming matches and devise strategies against specific opponents.
Speaking to reporters post the draw announcement on Friday, Sinclair stated, “This is when it gets real as a player. It comes fast, and I can only imagine what the guys are thinking right now — they must be so excited.”
If Canada secures the top spot in their group, they will continue playing in Vancouver for the round-of-32 game and potentially for a round-of-16 match as well.
In case Canada finishes as the runner-up in the group, they will confront the second-placed team from Mexico’s Group A.
During a live watch party for the draw at Craft Beer Market in Vancouver’s False Creek, Sinclair expressed contentment with Canada’s draw, noting that she finds the matches against Switzerland and Qatar to be favorable.
“I do like our group,” she remarked, referring to the upcoming games as winnable opportunities and expressing confidence in Canada’s prospects.
The official tournament schedule is expected to be released on Saturday.
