Mayor Darryl Krakowka of Tumbler Ridge extended an invitation to Carney to join the vigil on Friday, as confirmed by a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, NDP interim Leader Don Davies, and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May are also expected to be in attendance at the event. Furthermore, Governor General Mary Simon’s office has announced her participation in the vigil.
The House of Commons halted its usual proceedings on Wednesday to observe a moment of silence in honor of the Tumbler Ridge victims. Party leaders delivered solemn remarks in the chamber during the time typically designated for question period. Carney expressed the nation’s shock over the violence, extending condolences to the families affected by the tragic events in the mining town nestled in the Rocky Mountains’ foothills.
Following Carney’s statement, Poilievre condemned the shooting as “appalling,” emphasizing the unimaginable grief the affected families are enduring. Blanchet, Davies, and May also addressed the House, with May notably displaying emotional distress during her speech. In a touching moment, several Liberal MPs, including Jessica Fancy, offered support to May after her heartfelt tribute.
The House adjourned for the day after the leaders’ statements, with normal business resuming on Thursday. The tragedy continued to weigh heavily on the minds of MPs, evident during Thursday’s question period when Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer expressed condolences to the Tumbler Ridge families.
In response, Liberal House leader Steven MacKinnon highlighted that Prime Minister Carney will visit Tumbler Ridge on Friday to attend the vigil, emphasizing that federal representatives are working closely with provincial and municipal authorities to provide support to the grieving community. Prior to the question period, several MPs conveyed their sympathies, including Conservative MP Todd Doherty, who shared the profound sorrow felt by his constituents with ties to Tumbler Ridge.
