Indonesia’s main island of Java was struck by a predawn landslide caused by heavy rains, resulting in at least eight fatalities and 82 individuals reported missing. The incident occurred in Pasir Langu village in West Bandung district of West Java province, where continuous rainfall led to rivers overflowing and destroying 34 houses. Search and rescue teams faced challenges navigating through thick mud to locate survivors.
Abdul Muhari, a spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency, mentioned that efforts were underway to find the missing residents, with 24 individuals managing to escape the disaster. The most affected area, Pasir Kuning, witnessed the recovery of eight bodies following the landslide that occurred at 3 a.m. Workers and locals were seen tirelessly digging through the mud and debris in Pasir Langu, which had been completely covered by rocks, trees, and mud.
Teten Ali Mungku Engkun, who leads West Java’s Disaster Management Office, highlighted the difficulties posed by unstable ground conditions and persistent rainfall, hampering the search and rescue operations. Immediate response teams were dispatched to assess the damage and provide assistance following the disaster. Families residing near the landslide-prone area were evacuated as a precaution against further slope failures.
Authorities advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and evacuate promptly if they notice any signs of potential landslides. Indonesia has been prone to seasonal flooding and landslides, with the recent incident adding to the country’s history of natural disasters. In a previous catastrophe in Sumatra, over 1,200 people lost their lives due to floods and landslides, emphasizing the ongoing risks faced by the population in mountainous and flood-prone regions.
Continuous monitoring and preparedness are essential for mitigating the impact of such disasters, especially during the rainy season from October to April. The region has previously experienced tragic events like the Central Java floods and landslides in January, underscoring the importance of proactive measures to ensure the safety of vulnerable communities.
