The Vancouver Canucks confirmed on Friday that they have traded their captain, Quinn Hughes, to the Minnesota Wild. In return for the talented defenseman, the Canucks will be receiving forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, defenseman Zeev Buium, and a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL entry draft.
During a news conference on Friday night, Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin mentioned that the decision to trade Hughes had been brewing for some time as it became apparent that Hughes was considering a different direction. Despite efforts to persuade him to stay, the team ultimately had to explore potential trade destinations that would offer the best return for the Canucks.
The trade took place following the Canucks’ recent 3-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, leaving Vancouver at the bottom of the NHL standings with 25 points and a 2-7-1 record in their last ten games. Hughes, a standout player for the struggling franchise, had accumulated 23 points in the current season, including two goals. Notably, the 26-year-old, originally drafted seventh overall in 2018, had won the Norris Trophy in 2024 as the NHL’s top defenseman, setting a new points record for Canucks defensemen.
In a statement, Canucks team president Jim Rutherford expressed gratitude towards Hughes, acknowledging him as one of the franchise’s greatest players. Rutherford also emphasized the importance of the newly acquired players in the ongoing team rebuild, foreseeing a bright future with their contributions.
The recent developments mark a significant shift for the Canucks, particularly considering their playoff success in 2024 and subsequent challenges in the following seasons. Allvin highlighted the importance of adapting and evolving the team to build a championship-caliber squad, a process that began with previous trades and now continues with the acquisition of promising young talents like Rossi, Ohgren, and Buium from the Wild.
Responding to inquiries about team culture, Allvin dismissed the notion of a culture problem being a factor in Hughes’ trade, expressing confidence in the team’s leadership group and the progress being made under head coach Adam Foote’s guidance.
