“13-Year-Old Hero Saves Family from Ocean Ordeal”

Date:

A 13-year-old boy is being hailed for his heroic actions in rescuing his mother and two younger siblings from the ocean off the coast of Australia. Austin Appelbee swam over four kilometers to shore to seek help after their family was swept away.

The incident occurred when the family, on vacation from Perth, got caught in rough conditions while using kayaks and paddle boards hired from their hotel. Austin initially tried to use an inflatable kayak but had to abandon it due to water intake. He then removed his life jacket to aid his swim to shore, battling through challenging sea conditions for approximately four hours before reaching land and alerting authorities at 6 p.m.

A search helicopter located the mother and two children, who were wearing life jackets and holding onto a paddleboard, at 8:30 p.m. They had drifted 14 kilometers from their initial location after spending up to 10 hours in the water.

Insp. James Bradley commended Austin’s bravery, emphasizing that his determination and courage saved his family members’ lives. Joanne Appelbee expressed the difficulty of sending her eldest child for help while staying with the other children, acknowledging it as a tough decision. Despite initial doubts, she remained hopeful that Austin would reach shore safely.

The family remained positive during the ordeal, singing and joking to keep spirits up until it became dark and the situation grew more challenging. All three children were shivering and one had lost sensation in his legs due to the cold by the time they were rescued. Fortunately, all family members were assessed and did not require hospitalization.

The resilience and quick thinking of young Austin in this life-threatening situation have been praised by authorities and serve as a remarkable example of bravery and selflessness.
