The countdown is on with only 49 days left before the Canadian women’s Olympic hockey team kicks off their tournament in Milan, Italy, aiming to defend their Olympic championship.

The landscape of women’s hockey has seen significant shifts since the Canadians clinched a 3-2 victory over the Americans at the Beijing Winter Games in February 2022.

The establishment of the PWHL has revolutionized the Canadian team’s preparation for the Olympics, breaking away from the traditional centralized training approach where players gathered in one location for months ahead of the Games. This change has provided players a fresh platform to showcase their skills for national team selection.

Heading into the Olympic tournament, Canada and the U.S. continue to be the top contenders, although the Canadians might be considered the underdogs this time around.

The U.S. team underwent a major overhaul following three consecutive defeats to Canada in prominent tournaments between 2021 and 2022. The revamped American squad, boasting a talented and youthful core, has clinched victory in six consecutive matches against Canada.

Most notably, the Americans dominated the Canadians in the Rivalry Series, outscoring them 24-7 across four games, with a significant 10-4 victory marking a notable low point for Canada, marking their worst defeat since 2012.

Despite recent challenges, Canadian head coach Troy Ryan remains unfazed, stating, “I don’t think it’s a concern. We know we have business to do. We know it’s going to be a difficult challenge for us, for sure, but I think we’ve got perspective on it as well.”

The Canadian team is anticipated to be anchored by a seasoned core with extensive experience in winning major tournaments. While much has been discussed about the age disparity between the Canadian and American teams, the Canadian squad’s maturity brings valuable experience.
