A prominent banner displaying the image of Donald Trump was affixed to the exterior of the U.S. Justice Department headquarters on Thursday, showcasing the Republican president’s influence over the law enforcement agency that previously probed him. Trump banners have appeared outside other government entities in Washington, but positioning one at the esteemed Justice Department premises symbolized the diminishing independence of the department from White House directives.
The banner, situated between two columns at a building corner, bears the message “Make America Safe Again,” a slogan highlighting the administration’s efforts to combat unlawful immigration and violent offenses. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has positioned herself as Trump’s primary advocate, departing from the stance of past officeholders who aimed to preserve a separation from the White House to safeguard investigation and prosecution impartiality.
Amid accusations of politicizing the Justice Department, Trump officials rejected claims, attributing politicization to the Biden administration for initiating and subsequently dropping two federal criminal cases against Trump following his 2024 election victory. In a Thursday statement, the Justice Department expressed pride in commemorating 250 years of United States history and the endeavor to enhance national security under President Trump’s guidance.
The Trump administration’s scrutiny of perceived adversaries has intensified apprehensions regarding the agency’s potential exploitation for retaliatory purposes against political opponents. Legal actions were taken against New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey, but were later dismissed. Additionally, federal prosecutors pursued indictments against several Democratic lawmakers for allegedly encouraging military personnel to defy “illegal orders” in a video.
James Comey denounced the banner on social media, condemning its presence and highlighting the omitted inscription on the building stating, “Where law ends tyranny begins.” Furthermore, ongoing investigations are targeting U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for his congressional testimony and Democratic officials from Minnesota for possibly impeding federal immigration enforcement through public declarations.
