The federal government has announced funding exceeding $5.4 million for five initiatives led by reproductive and sexual health organizations. These projects, as outlined by Health Canada, are intended to enhance access to sexual and reproductive health services for women and marginalized communities nationwide.
The financial support will be channeled through Health Canada’s sexual and reproductive health fund, which assists community-based organizations in improving access to abortion and other sexual and reproductive health services for underserved populations.
Health Minister Marjorie Michel disclosed the funding details during a press conference in Montreal, accompanied by parliamentary secretary Marie-Gabrielle Ménard, Culture Minister Marc Miller, and MP Steven Guilbeault from Laurier-Sainte Marie.
The recipient organizations and their funding amounts are as follows:
– The Canadian Association of Midwives: $728,305
– Fertility Matters Canada: $860,078
– Abortion Care Canada: $949,038
– Endometriosis Network Canada: $966,884
– The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada: $1.93 million
Minister Michel highlighted various obstacles such as geographical barriers, stigma, language challenges, and lack of information that hinder access to quality care, emphasizing that investing in women’s health is crucial for Canada’s prosperity, underlining the importance of equity and dignity.
The allocated funds for the Canadian Association of Midwives will aid in developing resources for abortion, postpartum services, contraception, and gender-inclusive care. Fertility Matters Canada’s project seeks to enhance access to fertility care for Indigenous and 2SLGBQIA+ individuals through an online decision facilitation tool. Abortion Care Canada’s funding will focus on enhancing abortion care access for specific groups, while Endometriosis Network Canada aims to provide support through various resources and events. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada aims to improve menopause care inclusiveness, accuracy, and cultural appropriateness.
These initiatives are designed to tackle barriers that hinder women’s access to healthcare. The sexual and reproductive health fund also backs other organizations and projects dedicated to empowering women’s access to reproductive healthcare, including the National Abortion Federation Canada, the National Council of Indigenous Midwives, and the Centre for Sexuality.
