“Clinton to Face Congressional Committee on Epstein Inquiry”

Date:

Bill Clinton is set to make history by becoming the first former president in recent memory to face a congressional committee in what is anticipated to be a confrontational session. This closed-door deposition, focusing on matters related to Jeffrey Epstein’s investigations and prosecutions, will take place in his hometown of Chappaqua, New York. The House oversight committee, led by Republicans, recently interviewed his wife, Hillary Clinton, on the same subject.

In the aftermath of World War II, Harry Truman and Gerald Ford were the only ex-presidents to provide testimony before a congressional committee, though on less contentious issues. Clinton, now 79, has refuted any involvement or awareness of Epstein’s illicit activities during their association. While Clinton’s team acknowledges his presence on Epstein’s private plane four times, there are reports suggesting a higher frequency, a matter that may be explored during Friday’s questioning.

Clinton stated that there was no contact with Epstein after 2005, without publicly disclosing the reason why. His spokesperson, Angel Urena, emphasized that they belonged to the group that severed ties with Epstein before his crimes were exposed. Notably, Kenneth Starr, who investigated Clinton in the 1990s, appears to have had a prolonged relationship with Epstein.

During the late 1990s, Clinton confronted legal challenges and potential damage to his reputation due to his involvement with Monica Lewinsky. This eventually led to his impeachment, making him the first president to face such a predicament in over a century. Despite the Senate acquitting him on perjury and obstruction of justice charges, Clinton had to strike a deal to avoid criminal indictment.

The contrasting public images of Clinton and Starr in the late 1990s highlighted their divergent backgrounds and interactions. Starr’s correspondence with Epstein, spanning several years, has been less scrutinized compared to Clinton’s ties. Clinton acknowledged limited in-person encounters with Epstein between 2001 and 2003, with visuals showing them together, including at Epstein’s New York residence.

Democrats have criticized the Republican-led committee’s focus on the Clintons, accusing them of targeting the couple. The committee’s interest in summoning Howard Lutnick, Trump’s commerce secretary, regarding his links to Epstein has also stirred controversy. Furthermore, Democrats are questioning redactions in the Epstein files that pertain to Trump and are eyeing the midterm elections for a potential shift in power that could intensify scrutiny on Trump and Epstein connections.
