A young woman from St. Marys, Ontario, has received the opportunity for independence and stability through a charitable initiative aiming to establish tiny homes for individuals facing homelessness risks. Paige Noel, aged 20, now resides in a 490-square-foot home situated in her mother’s yard, marking a significant milestone in her journey towards self-sufficiency while maintaining proximity to her family. Expressing her gratitude, Noel remarked on the unexpected chance to have her own dwelling.
The nonprofit organization, Home Suite Home, initiated the construction of Noel’s home in May after being contacted by her mother seeking a housing solution for her daughter, who, despite being employed, struggled to afford rental expenses. Vickie Devocht, the executive director of Home Suite Home, emphasized the organization’s commitment to addressing the housing challenges faced by individuals like Paige, who work but face financial constraints. The fully furnished one-bedroom home is available for rent at $500 per month, with upcoming two-bedroom units expected to range between $800 and $1000 per month.
Noel expressed that with some personal touches, her new residence quickly felt like home. The construction of the home was carried out by Stratford contractor Teahen Construction, with additional support from local groups donating furniture and fixtures to assist in combating the escalating issue of homelessness in both urban and rural areas. Devocht highlighted the widespread nature of the housing crisis and emphasized the critical need for community support in addressing this pressing issue.
Drawing inspiration from the success of Project Tiny Hope in St. Thomas, Ontario, Home Suite Home envisions establishing a sustainable agri-village on farmland leased by a local farmer, with plans to unveil more tiny homes by the spring season. Noel expressed optimism about her newfound independence and the potential for personal growth that comes with having a place to call her own, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance in nurturing hope for the future.
