Date:

Canada’s women over 50 secured a bronze medal at the World Nations Cup of walking soccer in Torrevieja, Spain, triumphing over Australia in a penalty shootout. The match ended in a 1-1 draw in regular time, with Pauline Fisher scoring for Canada in the first half and Australia equalizing in the second half. The intense shootout saw goalkeeper Fatima Harris converting a crucial penalty, leading Canada to a 2-1 victory.

Defender Negar Farjadnia described the team’s unity during the shootout as they celebrated with Harris. Harris, who is in contention for the Golden Glove award, maintained three clean sheets earlier in the tournament and made two crucial saves during the shootout. Canada concluded the group stage with a record of 3 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws.

Despite a valiant effort, Canada suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to eventual champions France in the semifinals. The team almost equalized in stoppage time with a free kick but fell short. This marked Canada’s debut in the women’s category at the World Nations Cup, a significant moment for the players.

Farjadnia expressed her pride in representing Canada and its values on the global stage. The World Nations Cup, organized by the Federation of International Walking Football Associations, featured teams from 21 countries competing across different age categories. England dominated the tournament, claiming five out of six titles, with France securing victory in the women’s over 50 final against England.

Team Canada’s Coach Greg Mitchell highlighted the competitiveness in the women’s over 50 division, showcasing the increasing global popularity of walking soccer and the teams challenging the traditionally strong English side.
