“Pakistan’s Solar Power Surge Leads Global Renewable Energy Push”

Date:

In 2022, the global community witnessed devastating floods caused by melting glaciers that ravaged Pakistan, displacing a significant portion of the population and destroying crucial power infrastructure. To rebuild, the focus shifted towards clean energy, specifically solar power. The province of Sindh reconstructed homes with solar panels and directly imported panels from China. The enthusiasm for solar energy was so high that Pakistan added 22 gigawatts of solar power in 2024, exceeding Canada’s total installation.

This surge exemplifies the global trend towards renewable energy adoption, especially in developing nations leveraging the decreasing costs of solar and wind power. Concurrently, the United States, a major oil producer, is emphasizing fossil fuels while attempting to expand its carbon-emitting energy sales globally. At the recent COP30 UN climate summit in Belem, Brazil, discussions on transitioning away from fossil fuels were unexpectedly prioritized, indicating a growing international momentum towards cleaner energy alternatives.

Although a concrete agreement was not reached at COP30, around 80 countries endorsed a transition proposal, including leading European economies and nations susceptible to climate change impacts. The world is nearing the critical 1.5°C global warming threshold established in the Paris Agreement, while global fossil fuel emissions continue to rise, now exceeding 2015 levels by 10%. China remains a significant emitter due to its reliance on coal-fired power plants and energy-intensive industries.

Renewables are gaining prominence as costs decline, with renewable sources generating 34.3% of global electricity in the first half of 2025, surpassing coal for the first time. Global renewable power capacity is projected to double in the next five years. Delegates at COP30 were drawn to China’s efforts in renewable energy, as the nation leads in electric vehicle production and influences the supply chain for clean energy technologies. The shift away from fossil fuels faces challenges, primarily due to substantial subsidies that support the fossil fuel industry globally.

The absence of U.S. representation at COP30 underscores a shift towards a multi-polar climate leadership model, with countries like China, Brazil, and India playing pivotal roles in climate discussions. Despite initial obstacles, efforts to transition away from fossil fuels are gaining traction, with upcoming international summits focusing on this transition. The transition to renewables is not only driven by environmental concerns but also by economic interests, as clean energy becomes increasingly competitive globally. The evolving energy landscape necessitates a strategic shift towards sustainable alternatives to address future energy demands effectively.
