“Canada-U.S. Tariff Deal Negotiations Underway”

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday that negotiations are ongoing between Canadian and American officials regarding a tariff deal, following his recent meeting with the U.S. president to resolve the trade war. Carney assured that Canada stands to benefit once an agreement is reached, emphasizing that Canada already has favorable trade terms with the U.S., with most products being tariff-free despite previous trade actions by Trump. Carney expressed optimism for further improvements in various sectors through ongoing negotiations.

While the initial focus is on steel, aluminum, and energy sectors, Carney mentioned discussions about an auto agreement and finding solutions for forestry sector tariffs. He stressed the importance of securing the best deal for softwood lumber. Although no concrete agreement was reached during Carney’s visit to Washington, Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc stayed behind to work on potential terms.

Carney highlighted the need for specific progress in addressing sectoral tariffs that have impacted Canadian industries negatively. He acknowledged that the trading landscape may involve bilateral deals apart from the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement. Carney indicated a shift from the previous trend of closer integration with the U.S., emphasizing the need for Canada to strengthen itself independently.

In response to criticisms from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, Carney defended his approach of reengaging Canadian private sector investments in the U.S. as part of potential agreements on tariffs. Poilievre questioned Carney’s commitment to such investments and accused him of prioritizing American interests over Canadian workers.

Carney also discussed the potential revival of the Keystone XL pipeline project during his talks with Trump, emphasizing its significance for both countries. The project could align with Trump’s objectives and address the need for alternative oil supplies in U.S. refineries. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith praised Carney’s efforts to communicate effectively with Trump, suggesting a positive impact on resolving trade disputes.

While some political figures expressed support for Carney’s approach, others like Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged a tougher stance towards the U.S. if necessary. Ford emphasized the importance of defending Canadian interests in trade negotiations.
