“UN Calls for Probe into Fatal Shooting of Palestinians by Israeli Forces”

Date:

Human rights organizations have strongly criticized the fatal shooting of two Palestinian individuals in the occupied West Bank by Israeli security forces. Footage of the incident suggests that the victims were unarmed and surrendering before being shot dead.

In response to the incident, a spokesperson for the United Nations human rights office called for an independent investigation into the killings. The two men, Al-Muntasir Abdullah, 26, and Yousef Asasa, 37, were reportedly seen surrendering during a raid in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as shown in footage from Palestine TV news.

The Israeli military and police have initiated an investigation following the shooting, stating that the forces fired at suspects who had exited a building. The brother of one of the deceased men expressed shock at the incident, highlighting the brutality of eliminating someone who had surrendered.

A militant group, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, claimed one of the men as a commander and the other as a fighter. Israeli authorities described the two individuals as wanted figures linked to a “terror network” in the Jenin area but did not provide specific details or evidence of their alleged involvement.

The killing of Palestinians by Israeli forces in the West Bank has raised concerns about accountability. The UN has criticized the lack of due process and called for a proper handling of such cases without resorting to lethal force.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir expressed full support for the military and police involved in the incident, stating that terrorists should be eliminated. The minister’s comments have been condemned, with concerns raised about the credibility of any subsequent investigations carried out by entities not fully independent from the government.

Video footage of the incident depicts the victims surrendering before being directed back into a building and shot by the security forces. Human rights groups have called for international intervention, citing the unlikelihood of meaningful action from internal investigations.

The Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Ministry has denounced the shooting as an extrajudicial killing and a war crime. This incident follows a series of violent events in the West Bank, including the recent killing of two teenagers during a separate raid.

The surge in violence in the region has intensified since a ceasefire agreement was reached in Gaza, with ongoing clashes resulting in casualties on both sides. The UN has documented numerous Palestinian fatalities at the hands of Israeli forces and settlers, emphasizing the need for accountability and independent investigations into these incidents.
