“Saskatoon to Host 100th Brier Anniversary in 2027”

Date:

Saskatoon has been selected to host the 100th anniversary edition of the Brier in 2027, marking the seventh time the city will host the prestigious men’s curling championship. The event is scheduled to commence on February 26, 2027, at the SaskTel Centre. Notably, Saskatoon previously hosted the Brier in 2004 for its 75th anniversary and in 2012.

Curling Canada revealed the successful bid by Saskatoon at a local Montana’s BBQ & Bar, the title sponsor of the Brier. Tickets for the event may be available for purchase as early as March. CurlSask executive director, Steve Turner, expressed excitement about hosting the centennial celebration in Saskatchewan, emphasizing the deep-rooted connection between curling and the province’s culture.

Regina hosted the last national men’s curling championship in Saskatchewan in 2024. Both Regina and Saskatoon have collectively hosted the event 12 times, with Saskatchewan teams clinching the title seven times. The most recent victory for Saskatchewan was in 1980 when the Saskatoon-based team led by Rick Folk emerged victorious.

Mayor Cynthia Block highlighted the opportunity to showcase Saskatoon and celebrate the rich history of curling across the province. She emphasized the significance of curling in the local community, stating that curling rinks feel like home to many residents.

The successful bid was a collaborative effort by Discover Saskatoon and Saskatoon Destination Marketing Hotels Inc. The city councillors approved a funding request of $350,000 to support the bid, with expectations of substantial economic benefits for the region. The 2027 Brier winner will represent Canada at the World Men’s Curling Championship later that year.

The upcoming Brier in 2026 is slated to take place in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, starting on February 27.
