Guilbeault Warns: Canada at Risk of Missing Climate Targets

Date:

Former Liberal minister Steven Guilbeault has raised concerns that Canada will fall short of its climate change targets due to recent decisions made by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration. Guilbeault, speaking on Radio-Canada’s Tout le monde en parle, criticized agreements such as the recent memorandum with Alberta, which he believes will hinder the country’s ability to meet its climate goals. Guilbeault emphasized the need for a combination of market mechanisms and regulatory measures to achieve these targets, expressing skepticism about the current trajectory.

A report from the Canadian Climate Institute earlier this year echoed Guilbeault’s sentiments, stating that Canada’s 2030 climate objectives are now unattainable. Guilbeault’s appearance on the popular Quebec television show came shortly after his resignation as culture minister in response to the government’s agreement with Alberta, which includes plans for a new pipeline and relaxation of environmental regulations.

Guilbeault expressed disappointment over the lack of consultation regarding the agreement’s provisions, noting his efforts to propose modifications that were ultimately rejected. He emphasized the importance of being able to stand behind decisions made in government and highlighted the challenges of compromising on key environmental issues.

The former minister also criticized Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s approach to renewable energy, citing a significant loss of jobs and investment due to policy changes. Guilbeault questioned the motives behind the government’s concessions to Alberta and expressed his hope that his resignation would prompt a reevaluation of current climate policies. Despite his resignation, Guilbeault affirmed his support for Prime Minister Carney and pledged to continue advocating for environmental and cultural causes within the Liberal caucus.
