Ukrainian Surgeon in Canada Enhances War Trauma Skills

Date:

A Ukrainian surgeon, accustomed to working in a public trauma hospital, has journeyed to Hamilton to expand her knowledge of life-saving techniques for victims affected by Russia’s aggressive invasion. Dr. Mariia Kuzeikiv arrived in Canada in October under the Hamilton Health Sciences’ ASSIST program, which has facilitated training for seven Ukrainian doctors specializing in severe injury treatment related to war.

The initiative, spearheaded in 2022 by Dr. Mark Pahuta, an orthopedic spine surgeon and associate professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, aims to support the medical needs in Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict. Dr. Pahuta, driven by his Ukrainian heritage and personal connections to the country, expressed his desire to contribute positively by leveraging his expertise to aid the Ukrainian population during these challenging times.

The full-scale military invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022 has resulted in a devastating toll on civilians, with reports from the United Nations indicating a significant loss of lives, including children. Efforts to resolve the conflict have been ongoing, with U.S. President Donald Trump and other global leaders acknowledging the need for further action to address the crisis effectively.

The recent tragic incident in Ternopil on Nov. 19, where a Russian drone and missile attack claimed the lives of 26 individuals and left nearly 100 injured, highlights the continuous impact on Ukrainian communities. Despite the challenges faced by hospitals in Ukraine due to the shortage of surgeons, Dr. Pahuta emphasized the importance of enhancing the skills of visiting doctors to make their experience in Canada valuable and transferrable upon their return to Ukraine.

Dr. Kuzeikiv, actively involved in treating civilians and military personnel with gunshot and blast trauma in a Ukrainian trauma hospital, shared her experiences and challenges in managing severe injuries resulting from explosions. Her primary focus lies in facilitating patients’ recovery and restoring their basic movements, often requiring multiple surgeries for optimal outcomes.

Enthused about applying her newfound knowledge upon her return to Lviv, Ukraine, Dr. Kuzeikiv acknowledged the critical need for advanced techniques in her home country’s medical landscape. Collaborating with Dr. Pahuta and other medical professionals during a specialized surgery in Hamilton, Dr. Kuzeikiv gained insights into innovative approaches and navigational tools that can enhance patient care back in Ukraine.

Hamilton, renowned for its robust healthcare infrastructure and high volume of trauma cases, provides an ideal learning environment for Dr. Kuzeikiv. Dr. Paul Klas, a trauma and orthopedic surgeon at Hamilton Health Sciences, highlighted the benefits of knowledge exchange with international fellows, emphasizing the mutual learning opportunities for both parties.

Emphasizing the significance of innovation in medical practices, Dr. Pahuta underlined the importance of building connections with Ukrainian surgeons to foster collaborative advancements in surgical techniques. The exchange program not only enriches the visiting doctors’ skills but also enables local medical professionals to learn from their experiences in wartime healthcare settings.

Overall, the collaborative efforts between Ukrainian and Canadian medical professionals aim to strengthen the global medical community and enhance patient care through shared expertise and innovative practices.
