A Palestinian woman living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is urging the Canadian government to intensify its efforts to evacuate individuals safely from the conflict-ridden Gaza Strip. Najlaa Alzaanin, who relocated to Canada in 2019 and has been separated from 23 family members, is awaiting updates on her application to bring them to Canada through a special measures initiative.
Expressing her frustration, Alzaanin stated that Canada has not fulfilled its promise to assist their families in reaching a secure location. She recounted the harrowing experience of her mother, brother, and nephew being rescued from the initial war onslaught in Gaza. The ongoing bombings have decimated their hometown of Beit Hanoun, forcing them into a state of perpetual displacement and dire living conditions, including tent dwellings.
Alzaanin painted a grim picture of the situation her family faces, describing it as “unbelievable” and heartbreaking to witness. She highlighted the plight of her diabetic mother, who has lost significant weight due to inadequate access to essential medications, food, and clean water.
Despite an initial peace agreement, Alzaanin remains eager for her family to reunite with her in Canada for a more stable existence. The Canadian government’s special measures program, launched by the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada in January 2024, aims to facilitate the arrival of extended family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents from Gaza. While 880 individuals have successfully relocated to Canada under this program, advocates like Halifax lawyer Asaf Rashid criticize the slow progress and limited intake capacity.
Navigating bureaucratic hurdles, such as biometric requirements and security screenings, poses significant challenges for individuals in conflict zones like Gaza. Wassim Obeid, endeavoring to bring 15 family members to Halifax, explained how logistical constraints hinder the processing of their applications. He remains hopeful that the recent ceasefire will facilitate smoother procedures for their relocation.
Alzaanin’s unwavering determination and hope sustain her through the ordeal, as she strives to secure a better future for her family and fellow Palestinians. Amidst the turmoil and uncertainty, she remains resolute in her advocacy efforts, emphasizing the urgent need for assistance and compassion towards those affected by the conflict in Gaza.
