The current job market poses significant challenges for young individuals embarking on their careers, with one recent graduate highlighting the impact of skepticism and criticism from older generations.
Expressing frustration, Sami Rasheed mentioned, “It really pushes my buttons when other generations say that we’re doing something wrong.” He emphasized the lack of belief in his efforts and the continuous struggle to secure employment.
Despite excelling academically at the University of Toronto’s business program and receiving positive feedback from work placements, Rasheed faced a daunting job search journey, sending out over 1,100 applications but receiving minimal responses.
“I spent a lot of mornings just dreading getting up and putting in another eight hours applying to jobs,” Rasheed shared, highlighting the emotional toll of the prolonged job hunt.
Recent statistics indicate a concerning trend, with the unemployment rate for individuals aged 15-24 reaching 14.5% in August, the highest since 2010. Furthermore, data from July revealed that just under 54% of young Canadians were employed, marking the lowest rate since 1998 (excluding pandemic-related months).
The youth unemployment crisis is impacting Gen Z individuals aged 15-24, with significant implications for the future workforce. Analysts delve into the factors contributing to this challenging job market scenario.
Following persistent efforts, Rasheed recently secured a temporary position at a bank, providing a glimmer of hope for a more stable opportunity in the future.
Experts emphasize that attributing the challenges faced by young job seekers to a lack of effort is misguided. Economics professor Mikal Skuterud refuted claims of laziness among the youth, emphasizing their ambition and dedication.
Skuterud highlighted the diminishing job opportunities due to trade uncertainties, with sectors exposed to U.S. tariffs experiencing substantial setbacks. The reduction in job vacancies from over one million to below half a million presents a stark reality for new entrants into the labor market.
Furthermore, the impact of external factors such as AI development and economic conditions adds to the complexity of the job search process for young individuals.
