“Jesse Marsch Scouting Fresh Talent for Canadian World Cup Squad”

Date:

Jesse Marsch is gearing up the Canadian men’s team for the upcoming World Cup while also scouting for fresh talent. Emphasizing the diversity of the country, Marsch highlighted the importance of utilizing all available resources to attract top players. Three new dual-national prospects – Marcelo Flores from Tigres, Alfie Jones from Middlesbrough, and Owen Goodman from Huddersfield Town – are set to join the squad for the November international matches.

Ranked 28th globally, the Canadian team will face 23rd-ranked Ecuador on November 13 at Toronto’s BMO Field and 50th-ranked Venezuela on November 18 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Marcelo Flores, a 22-year-old winger born in Georgetown, Ontario, holds dual Canadian-Mexican citizenship and is eligible for a one-time switch according to FIFA regulations.

While Flores will only be a training player in the November camp, Jones, a 28-year-old centre back with Canadian lineage, is finalizing his Canadian citizenship process. On the other hand, 21-year-old goalkeeper Goodman, who moved to Canada at a young age, already possesses Canadian citizenship. Marsch expressed his satisfaction with the talent discoveries and his commitment to the long-term vision for the team.

Former coach John Herdman had previously tried to recruit Flores, who initially chose to represent Mexico. However, Flores has shown a growing interest in playing for Canada, as indicated by his recent interactions with Marsch. Having made his mark in various youth and senior leagues, Flores’ potential contribution to the Canadian team is highly anticipated.

Jones, who recently joined Middlesbrough, is a seasoned defender with a strong background in English football. Goodman, expressing his strong allegiance to Canada, is determined to secure a spot in the national team. Despite missing key players like Alphonso Davies and Moise Bombito, Marsch remains optimistic about the team’s prospects in upcoming matches against Ecuador and Venezuela.
