The Department of National Defence announced a strategic restructuring within the Canadian military to enhance its agility and adaptability to evolving technologies. A new joint forces command has been established to consolidate critical support functions like military health services, logistics, operational support, and military police, following the lead of allied countries like Australia.
Under the leadership of Lt.-Gen. Darcy Molstad, the Canadian Joint Forces Command (CJFC) will oversee emerging areas such as counter-drone warfare and future integration of air and missile defense capabilities. The CJFC’s mandate covers joint military capabilities across various domains including land, sea, air, cyber, and space.
The recent conflict between Russia and Ukraine has underscored the urgency of these organizational changes, highlighting the need for a unified command structure that can effectively manage non-traditional military elements. Molstad emphasized the significance of adapting to modern warfare tactics and technologies observed in the Ukrainian conflict.
As part of the restructuring, a key focus will be on strengthening the Canadian Forces Health Services Group to ensure the provision of comprehensive healthcare services, especially in high-stress conflict situations. This enhancement aligns with Canada’s commitments to NATO.
While the transition of military police oversight to CJFC is pending under Bill C-11 legislation, Molstad clarified that the organization would maintain operational independence in executing policing functions. This shift reflects a strategic move towards a more coordinated and responsive military structure.
