“Canada’s Palacio and Brossard to Lead Team at FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup”

Date:

Goalkeeper Lea Palacio and forward Esther Brossard have been chosen to lead Canada at the upcoming FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup in the Philippines. The tournament, featuring 16 teams, will take place from November 21 to December 7 in Pasig City, Metropolitan Manila. In Group B, Canada will face tough competition from Spain, Thailand, and Colombia.

Spain has a successful history in the UEFA Women’s Futsal Championship, while Thailand and Colombia have also shown prowess in regional competitions. Canada made a significant impact by winning the CONCACAF W Futsal Championship earlier this year in Guatemala, securing their spot in the World Cup.

Coach Alexandre Da Rocha expressed pride in the team’s qualification and aims to continue their success in the upcoming tournament. Futsal is a fast-paced indoor game played with five players on each team, similar to hockey.

Canada’s World Cup squad includes key players like Palacio, honored as the Best Goalkeeper at the CONCACAF Championship, and Brossard, recognized as the Best Player for scoring eight goals in the tournament. The team will depart for the Philippines soon for pre-tournament preparations.

The tournament format includes four groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the knockout stage. Female futsal players have long advocated for a FIFA championship, and the inaugural Women’s Futsal World Cup marks a significant milestone in the sport’s development.

In contrast, the men’s Futsal World Cup, initiated in 1989, has seen Brazil dominate with six titles. Canada has had a presence in men’s futsal tournaments but has yet to achieve significant success. The women’s tournament brings fresh opportunities for Canadian futsal players to showcase their talent on a global stage.
