Israel has confirmed the identity of the hostage, Sudthisak Rinthalak, received from Hamas as a Thai agricultural worker. The body of Israeli police officer Ran Gvili, the last hostage to be returned, remains in Gaza. The transfer of the hostages’ bodies in Gaza fulfills a crucial condition of President Donald Trump’s plan to end the two-year Gaza war.
Rinthalak’s body, who was killed during Hamas’ attack on Kibbutz Be’eri on October 7, 2023, was transported from Gaza by the Red Cross for forensic identification by the Israeli military. Hamas agreed to release all hostages held in Gaza under a ceasefire agreement, resulting in the return of 20 living hostages and 27 bodies in exchange for Palestinian detainees and prisoners.
Following the ceasefire on October 10, violence has decreased, but Israel has continued strikes on Gaza, alleging Hamas infrastructure targets. Medics at Al-Kuwaiti Hospital reported five Palestinians, including two children, killed in an Israeli missile attack in Khan Younis. The victims, from a single family, were mourned by relatives as their bodies were transported through the city.
Aisha Abu Jazar, a witness living near the attacked family, expressed shock at the Israeli strike and questioned the violation of the ceasefire. The Israeli military defended its actions, targeting a “Hamas terrorist” in response to an earlier attack on troops. Hamas condemned the attack, blaming Israel for escalating tensions.
In a separate incident, the leader of an Israeli-backed Palestinian militia, Yasser Abu Shabab, was killed in Gaza during a family dispute. His death may impact Israel’s efforts to establish an alternative to Hamas rule in Gaza. The Popular Forces, supported by Israel, operate in a significant portion of the Gaza Strip, opposing Hamas but facing criticism as collaborators with the Israeli military.
Since the ceasefire, over 350 Palestinians have died, with three Israeli soldiers killed by Palestinian militants. The ongoing violence underscores the fragile situation in Gaza despite international efforts for peace.
