Vancouver Park Board Issues Apology to 2SLGBTQ+ Community

Date:

Vancouver’s park board has recently passed a motion to issue an apology to the 2SLGBTQ+ community for their decision to host the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience in Stanley Park in November. This decision has garnered attention from author J.K. Rowling.

Responding to a post by commissioner Tom Digby, where he commended the board for their motion that included an apology and disavowal of the author and her stance on transgender rights, Rowling expressed her surprise at being disavowed by Vancouver Parks and Recreations.

The park board’s decision to bring the immersive Harry Potter programming to Stanley Park was discussed during an emotional meeting, with little awareness of J.K. Rowling’s controversial views. Rowling has publicly stated her belief that biological sex is unchangeable and that self-identification of gender could pose risks, especially to non-transgender women and children.

During the meeting, Rob Hadley of Vancouver’s 2SLGBTQ+ Advisory Committee highlighted concerns that Rowling’s views and activities could harm the rights of transgender individuals. Hadley emphasized that featuring her work in a publicly funded event may overshadow the experiences and worries of transgender residents in the city.

Representatives from Qmunity, a prominent organization serving 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in British Columbia, expressed disappointment over the decision to host the Harry Potter attraction, stating that it contradicts Vancouver’s values of inclusivity and respect. They pointed out that the move was a setback from the progress made through the city’s Transgender, Gender Diverse, Two-Spirit (TGD2S) Action Plan.

In response to the backlash, the park board motion, titled “Affirming the Park Board’s Commitment to Transgender Lives and Rights,” reaffirms support for TGD2S people and condemns transphobia. It disavows J.K. Rowling’s political activities and ensures that the installation will only run for the current season.

The board members expressed regret over the situation and are working on finding ways to make amends. The decision to disavow Rowling’s political activities and prioritize transgender rights reflects Vancouver’s commitment to upholding human rights for all individuals.
